Tradition: The Elf

The Elf on the Shelf.  He’s everywhere.  And, I’ll be honest, the little dude creeps me out!  He’s a tad evil-looking.  I’d behave if I knew he was watching me!

A couple of years ago I received an elf stocking holder as a Christmas gift from someone.  I find it difficult to dispose of anything Christmas, though I had no particular use for this elf.  I packed him away when the season was through an gave him no further thought.

Last Christmas I unknowingly grabbed him out of the holiday tote.  As I carefully unwrapped the mysterious contents of the stocking he was stored in my boys watched with wonder.  As soon as his head peaked out they both cried “Elf on a Shelf!”  Clearly they had been hearing about this creature from their friends at school.  I was good with it – he wasn’t creepy and he would give us a little extra fun for the season.

The boys had a blast!  Every  morning was a treasure hunt to find where the elf was hiding.  The favorite location was when the elf was found looking down at them from atop the cabinet in the kitchen.

This year the little guy is back.  And, so is his boss Santa.  I have a stuffed Santa that usually lives on the bookshelf of Christmas stuff the boys can play and interact with.  This year just for a change I put him by himself.  Keegan was very skeptical of that and refuses to touch him.  He might be magic like the elf and we wouldn’t want to stop him from going to see the real Santa!  He has yet to move from his designated spot but is carefully looked over each morning to see if he moved.

It is such a joy to hear the giggles each morning as they hunt in their jammies for the crazy places the elf likes to watch them.  It starts off our day with a smile.  What could possibly be bad about that?!?!

About Brotherly Love

I am a mom, partner, teacher and a lover of life. I have two fabulous boys who define my life as I know it. One of my children has been diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, Asperger's and anxiety disorder. I blog as much about him as I do about my life and the lives of my immediate family.

  1. We have the Elf, too. Miss D. named him Steve.

The other day, she put Steve on top of a wooden reindeer we own and it looked kind of pornographic 🙂

    We are loving the elf!!!
