Recipe for Disaster

Sunday morning I awoke to a clock that read 8:12am.  I couldn’t believe my boys had slept so late!  My excitement was quickly washed away when I realized that the time change had occurred but I hadn’t yet changed with it.

I wiped a tear from my eye as I moved the numbers back an hour – so much for that “extra hour” of sleep.

The boys quickly reminded us that we had promised them breakfast out because of good behavior for the week.  So, my honey did her yoga while the boys and I dressed for the day.  She quickly dressed and we headed out to Bob Evans.

We arrived at Bob Evans at around 8:30am.  *disclaimer: we chose Bob Evans because the boys had coupons they got from trick-or-treating at the zoo that they were DYING to use* The place was PACKED!  I give them credit, though.  We were seated within 15 minutes.  We ordered quickly and had our food by 9:15.

We were overly intelligent mommies (maybe that hour of sleep really DOES do something!) and packed coloring books, crayons and the Toys R Us Christmas Wish Book (one copy for each child!).  Santa’s gonna have a full sleigh and an empty pocketbook if he brings everything on the wish list!

We were excited to be seated at a table with chairs and not a booth.  Eli could stand at the table without difficulty – he really doesn’t sit well at home or in restaurants.  He was able to wiggle around without actually being a bother to anyone.

When breakfast arrived we ate like we hadn’t had a meal in decades.  Eli polished off a full plate of french toast, a couple of strips of bacon and various other sundries from my plate and my honey’s plate in less than 15 minutes.  Keegan actually ate everything on his plate and never whined once about ANYTHING.

It suddenly occurred to me that prior to time change my boys were eating their first meal of the day at 10:15am!  These are the boys that are begging for breakfast by 7:15 EVERY SINGLE MORNING.  These are the eating machines that have inhaled breakfast AND 2 snacks by 10:15.  And, on Nana days, have consumed their lunch by that time as well.  What I’m trying to say is that these kids can eat!

I stopped all conversation – though there wasn’t much, what with all the food going into the little boy mouths.  And I shared a very heartfelt thank you with my boys.  I realized what an amazing thing had just happened.

On the day of the time change this crazy mommy took 2 boys who had been up late the night before to a crowded restaurant with a wait.  I offered them activities that were not overly exciting so could have gone either way with the behavior.  I made them wait for 3 hours past the time that they are used to eating to have any food in their bellies.  And those 2 little boys were AMAZING!

I was so incredibly proud of my boys for rising to the occasion but, I don’t think I’ll be tempting fate again any time soon!

About Brotherly Love

I am a mom, partner, teacher and a lover of life. I have two fabulous boys who define my life as I know it. One of my children has been diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, Asperger's and anxiety disorder. I blog as much about him as I do about my life and the lives of my immediate family.

  1. Your Sunday morning totally beats my Sunday morning. Miss M. woke me up at 5:20 and I was bitter about it…and then I realized that it was actually 4:20 because I, too, forgot about the time change. AARG! Glad your family outing was a success.

I’m in your shoes and I know how appreciated those triumphs are! Sometimes I’m jealous that other families can do a “simple” thing like eating out, without apparent challenges. Those of us with special needs kids know how much work it takes to get through the same “simple” thing as that family in the booth across the way. Yay for adaptability!

  3. My dog is having difficulty with the time change. It sounds like your kids came through marvelously!

fantastic! My kids were up at 5:15am that morning.
What a fantastic day you had. Sometime I think those days are so much sweeter because they make up for some of the other days we have. Being prepared helps! Way to go!!

I’m glad it went so well!!

Don’t you just love when things go so well! Yay, kids! But, I agree: you probably don’t want to tempt fate again for a while. She isn’t often so generous!
