What an AMAZING vacation!!!!!!
We started out the vacation weekend by picking up Grandma Mary (my mom) at the airport in Detroit. We finished up the day by coloring eggs in anticipation of Easter!
On Easter Sunday we arose to missing Easter baskets – at our house we set out baskets like we set out stockings at Christmas. Then the Easter Bunny loads the baskets and hides them around the house! So we set out on our hunt for the baskets. Keegan’s was found quickly but Eli really had to hunt for his this year!
We went to church where the boys were phenominally behaved! They listened to the homily and enjoyed the music. When we got home we had our annual egg hunt in the back yard! Grandma Mary and Uncle John hid the eggs while we were at church. We also enjoyed some trampoline jumping, some bicycle riding and some sidewalk chalk drawings!
Monday we took advantage of a georgous day! We went to the Toledo Zoo with Grandma Mary and Uncle John. They boys enjoyed riding the train, seeing the baby giraffe, play in Nature’s Neighborhood and see Baby Louie the Elephant.
We spent Tuesday reliving the past year. Tuesday was the anniversary of my sister’s death and the purpose for the only post I had during my vacation. We went out for dinner Tuesday night and toasted a margarita to my sister – her favorite drink =). We came home from dinner and started packing.
On Wednesday we piled into the car – my honey was left behind because she had to work – at the early hour of 5am. We arrived at Detroit Metro at 6am and said goodbye to Grandma Mary. We started a rainy journey to the cabin. Thank goodness the boys slept much of the way!
We took Uncle John to Ludington, MI to see Lake Michigan. It was cold, windy and rainy but it’s always nice to say hello to the lake! We went back to the cabin and set up all of our play activities.
On Thursday it snowed!!! Yes, you read that correctly! My brother lives in Arizona and hasn’t seen snow for 13 years. We thanked our sister for that! We still played outside and had a great time. We even went for a small nature walk.
On Friday morning we awoke to this:
But, the sun came out and all of the snow melted. The temperature reached the mid 50s and it was a great day! We got a campfire going the good ole’ fashioned way, though Eli wanted to use a blow torch to get the fire raving. But, we worked hard and pampered the fire and it finally took off. We took a longer nature walk into the state grounds. We enjoyed s’mores after dinner. It was a fabulous day!
On Saturday we packed up, cleaned up and headed home. We made a sidetrack into Detroit Metro once again and dropped Uncle John off at the airport. It was hard to leave him. We did a lot of bonding over the past two weeks. Keegan cried for a good 15 minutes after we left the airport. He missed Uncle John.
Today was our day to prepare to get back into normal life – whatever that is. It was also a chance for Eli to have a down day. He really did quite well over the past two weeks with all of the changes and craziness. But it was obvious today by his nonstop talking, his emotional outbursts and his excessive energy that he was done, overloaded. So he didn’t have to leave the house today and he didn’t have to do much of anything he didn’t want to.
So tonight as my angels fall asleep we bid adeu to a truly wonderful vacation. We did a lot of talking about Auntie Heidi. We shared memories and shed tears. We bonded as a family and made new memories together. We enjoyed each other and out time together. It was everything I had hoped for and more.
